Combatting Sheep by Mist: Sleep Therapy Scents

Mar 9, 2010 by

Lately I’ve been having trouble falling asleep and as a result have been going to bed later and later every night.  I can’t event count how many times I lay in bed staring at my ceiling contemplating the awful paint job before me.  I tried a few things to combat the problem -with the exception of medication – like sheep counting, running around before falling asleep, hot showers, cold showers, mint tea, fresh air, you name it, I’ve done it. Nothing has worked for me. The bad part is, in the morning I’m hardly able to function for the first two hours because I’m physically exhausted from lack of sleep and mentally exhausted from thinking about the little sleep I got.

That is until I found myself perusing the many products laid out on the shelves of Bath and Body Works in Bayshore while looking for stuffed sheep to help me count at night. Instead, I found an Aromatherapy Sleep line that intrigued my senses -literally.

I picked up the Lavender and Chamomile concoction and started reading the back label, when a very helpful sales girl approached me to offer some samples and provide assistance. After some discussion, she mentioned that she was a bit of an insomniac as well and that the pillow mist has been of tremendous help.

Thinking one more farm animal count will drive me over the edge, I took the plunge and bought a couple of products with the Lavender Chamomile scent, as I felt Lavender-Vanilla -while nice – is  a touch too strong for me.

The basket came with a Sleep Body Lotion and Aromatherapy Sleep Pillow Mist.  I put the products to test that same night when I went home.

It worked like a charm, it was lavender-lights out for me.

I’m sharing my ritual now for all the lost souls that are looking for a non-medicated way of 1. relaxing before bed and thus 2. falling asleep!

Voila the ritual :

  1. Spray the pillow mist on pillow, sometimes a couple of sprays on the comforter and give it a few minutes to get in and avoid getting it on your face/body
  2. Lightly apply the lotion to body/hands
  3. Rest head on pillow and enjoy a peaceful sheepless sleep

The scents and mixed oils have a way of calming – almost numbing- my conscious into deep sleep, and the lotion softens the body if the room is dry and maintains the scent so you’re in that cloud of sleepy lavender.

There is an extensive line for the Aromatherapy Sleep which includes body mist, bath salts, candles, massage oil, roll on scents and more.  I personally find the pillow mist and lotion to be good key-products, as they take up the least amount of time to work (versus candles that need some burn time and bath salts that require the luxury of having a bath). If the schedule allows though, go all in for some bath by candlelight followed by lotion and mist. Make sure it’s the weekend, so you don’t miss out on work. Which reminds me of my disclaimer: Do not replace your daily moisturizer with the sleep lotion as its effect is very strong.  I made this mistake when I first purchased this product, and realized how powerful it was during an 8-hour shift. All I could think about was pillows, quilts and feathers.
