Cornwall: A New Destination on Your Travel Map
A few weeks ago, when we found out about a friend’s exhibition in Cornwall, we debated whether or not we should make the trek down to see her work. It wasn’t the hour-long drive that was keeping us away, it was the destination itself.
Let’s be honest for a minute: the common impression among people – that aren’t from Cornwall or have relatives there – is a poor one. It’s a city that was featured in a bad documentary on smuggling, there was a factory that basically served as an olfactory offense, and it’s really just a border town you pass through to get to cheap products in the U.S.
When we drove down to see our friend’s work, we decided to stay for a bit after our gallery visit and see what Cornwall was all about. We already made the trip down, what did we really have to lose?
Cornwall: We Are Sorry
It was totally a case of judging the book by its smelly cover. The place is actually a visual gem.
There is a beautiful waterfront that is absolutely breathtaking. The view itself is worth the drive. There are bike paths all along the scenic spots, with plenty of green space and picnic areas to sit and relax. Nearby, there is a large park that comes with its own water splashpad for the children.
And that’s just the impression we got from a short boardwalk near the seaway. It started raining after a while, so we had to retreat and promised to come back again on a nicer day to see more of Cornwall and give it the proper attention it needs.
The Girls Return
Two weeks later, we returned to Cornwall with a few others family members to spend the day and see what this old Canadian town had to offer.
We met with Gaye Adams, the Marketing Manager of Downtown Cornwall Business Improvement Area (DCBIA). She gave us a tour of some interesting places in Cornwall, like the Museum, and showed us the hot spots in and around downtown.
We came back with so many photographs, a great deal of information and a very altered opinion of Cornwall. It really is an overlooked place; with many hidden treasures, a rich historic background, lovely landscapes and friendly welcoming people.
We’re working on a little Cornwall Survival Guide, based on our notes and a couple of reviews (and recommendations) about some of the businesses there.
Check back to see what makes Cornwall a charming place to relax, and if someone asks you to stop for a visit there, don’t even think about it – just GO!
