Kid Kaf – A Little Piece Of Heaven For Parents

I’m a typical Canadian working mom who regularly suffers from pangs of guilt for not spending more time with my 22 month old. As a result, I’m constantly on the lookout for places that are child-friendly and allow for extensive socializing with my little one. A while back, I heard about Kid Kaf, a specialized establishment to take your children to. It is like a coffee shop meets a playground indoors. You get to enjoy some coffee, a treat, the company of your adult friends, while your child plays off in a dedicated area for tots. You’re not as worried about him running off anywhere he’s not supposed to go or touching anything dangerous. After a few visits, I struck a friendship with Adeline – the owner of Kid Kaf.

A few days ago, I got in touch with Adeline to ask a few questions and profile her under our “Support Local” feature.

ShopHaven (SH): I love the concept of Kid Kaf, how did you come up with the idea?
Adeline (A): This is not my idea originally.  I stole the idea when I was in Calgary. They have four or five establishments similar to Kid Kaf and I was a manager of “Jump and Java” in Calgary before moving to Ottawa.  When I arrived here, I looked for a place like this and could not find any so I decided to open one in Ottawa!

SH:  You offer a wide variety of snacks for children and adults, what are some of the items that you offer?
A: We offer kid platter which includes half a sandwich, yogurt, a kid juice and side of fruit or veggies.  We also offer fruit and veg platters all on their own. You can get fresh paninis made with roasted ham or baked chicken breast.

SH:   Do you have any events at Kid Kaf?
A: We currently have a yoga class for young children on Sundays with a certified yoga teacher.
We will be offering a yoga camp with the same teacher in July and August. Eventually, we will be offering mom and baby yoga classes as well. We are also working on a program of “music for young children” in the fall.  We have fitness classes for moms and babies as well as postnatal classes.
We’re also planning on having workshops for new moms on quick and healthy snacks, and a few on weight loss.

SH:  Do you host birthday parties?  If so, what types of packages do you offer?
A: We host birthday parties on weekends and offer 3 packages:  The first one is a “Lunch Package”, which includes food for children and kid juices. Th second is a “Snack Package” which includes a 16″ fruit or veggie platter. The third one is kid juices only.

SH:  What sets Kid Kaf apart from other establishments that have a similar concept?
A: Kid Kaf is the only business that offers a great area for kids but still places parents first.
